Ever since I started building for the web, I’ve had a bit of an aversion to “off-the-shelf” solutions. That’s not to say that they’re no good—far from it. The ever-expanding range of online services for small businesses is so rich and varied that there is almost too much choice when it comes to making a decision that is right for you. The challenge is that if you make the wrong choice, it can be difficult to change. Once you’ve committed to using a certain system to manage your day-to-day affairs, it often becomes more hassle than it’s worth to migrate to something else. Over time, you just live with the inconveniences and workarounds, accepting them as part of the process.
This is partly why I’ve always had a tendency to build things myself. Our website CMS, Traffic, has been in existence since I was a freelancer. I originally built it for myself before I even realised there were open-source solutions available like WordPress (which, at the time, was still just a blogging tool). Some might argue that it’s pointless to build something when there’s already an existing solution available, but I don’t believe that’s necessarily true. Custom-built solutions can provide a better fit, greater flexibility, and ultimately a more efficient way of working—especially when they are tailored to specific needs.
The Beginnings of Blend
When we started Whitespace, we were already discussing the need for a project tracker to help us keep on top of our work. Rather than searching for an external solution, I began developing something internally, starting with a simple client database. This quickly evolved into something much more robust, with features such as an estimate and invoicing system and a database to track all the domain names and hosting packages we manage for clients. This system became integral to our operations from day one, and we named it “Blend.”
One of the first features we added was the project's database. However, due to time constraints, I never quite got it “production ready.” As a result, we had to settle for using an existing system alongside Blend. While this worked for a while, the limitations of the external tool became increasingly apparent. The need for something more tailored to our workflow was clear.
Why Blend is Different
Many businesses, especially SMEs, struggle to find a CRM that truly meets their needs without unnecessary complexity or high costs. That’s where Blend comes in. Unlike HubSpot or Salesforce, which can be overwhelming and expensive for smaller teams, Blend is designed to be cost-effective and flexible, making it suitable for businesses with just one employee up to those with hundreds.
What makes Blend unique is its ability to be tailored to each business’s specific needs. While many CRMs come loaded with features that may never be used, Blend allows companies to include only the functionalities they need and exclude anything unnecessary. This keeps things simple, ensuring businesses don’t pay for features they’ll never use.
Blend is designed to handle client management, invoicing, project tracking, and even some financial integrations. It’s built for simplicity while still being powerful enough to support growing businesses. And because it’s adaptable, businesses don’t have to adjust their workflow to fit the tool—the tool adjusts to them.
The Case for a Customisable CRM
If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that software should work with you, not against you. Off-the-shelf solutions often cater to a broad audience, which means they include features you might never use while lacking the ones that would be most valuable to your business. This can lead to inefficiencies, workarounds, and frustration.
With Blend, businesses can ensure that their tools work for them, not against them. It integrates smoothly into existing workflows without forcing users to change the way they operate. This flexibility is key for SMEs that need software to grow and adapt alongside their business.
Final Thoughts
Finding the right CRM shouldn’t mean compromising on functionality or paying for features you don’t need. Blend is designed to provide small and medium-sized businesses with a powerful yet flexible solution that scales with them. Whether you’re a solo entrepreneur or managing a small or large team, Blend can be customised to suit your specific needs, ensuring you stay in control of your workflow.
If your current tools aren’t quite right, there’s no need to settle. Blend is the smarter choice—offering the simplicity, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness that modern businesses need to thrive.
